Today was a big day for us. A day that I literally had dreams about. Mast stepping day.
Last week we tried to step the mast but due to high winds we had to cancel. The crane operator and I both thought it too much for the delicate operation of slipping the tabernacle onto the wire pipe and then aligning the four holes perfectly. But today the weather man was predicting little to no wind but some rain. Rain doesn’t bother me too much so I said all systems go, and the yard agreed!

One thing that has been irking me for a while on Sundowner is the dished down deck around the carriage bolts that hold the deck beams to the cabin top. I didn’t know why they dished down, but they have corroded some that I can see due to rust stains. Could they have been over tightened? Could the deck core have rotted beneath them? Or could it just be the intense strain that has been put on the boat during its long voyages. Sundowner is no spring chicken. She has more miles under […]

Much has been said and praised in this blog about Butyl tape. Its practically Dani’s pet. But we’ve only begun to put it to the test it seems. After much discussion and hemming and hawing over what to try to rebed the portlights with, we decided to give our old standby another go and see if it can live up to the job. The alternatives of course would have been either a polysulfide caulk or something like 3M 4200.
Who can say why we decided to go with the butyl. We’ve s […]

Not too much fun stuff to report this weekend so far. We have been busy but it’s just finishing up other projects. We sanded down all the holes that we had previously poured epoxy into for the staysail traveler and also all the holes we had filled up near the bowsprit. We have also reinstalled two stanchions to fix leaks. Of course it is never quite that easy right?
The problem with stanchions is that they are subjected to lots of pressure as people or things grab and pull on the lif […]

We are having an early Christmas here with parts and supplies arriving often with many more to come. One of our recent additions is two 50 foot rolls of butyl tape, specially ordered off of the internet. What is butyl tape you ask? If you’ve been following this blog a while I’m sure you already know as we used it plenty to re-bed deck hardware and stop leaks.
But for those who haven’t and for the Chemist inside us all (especially you Dad) butyl tape is made from butyl rubber wh […]

Oh my readers… A long and sordid tale.
Of all the challenges the engine room refit has brought, perhaps the most seemingly innocuous has become one of the most arduous. It is the new engine panel. The engine panel is the “dashboard” of the boat motor. And clearly we’d have to have a new one. The problem came in the form of shapes and sizes. The old exterior cover for the panel would not match the new. And thus the project began to manifest itself.
I u […]
